Holiday Gift Sets on Shopify: Set Up Your Cart for Gift Buyers

Gift buyers do not shop like everyone else. They are buying for someone else, often for more than one person, and they are working to a deadline. A store that only sells single products, one at a time, makes them do all the work. A store with ready-made sets, gift extras in the cart and a clear last order date makes the decision easy.

Whether your season is Diwali, Black Friday, Christmas or Orthodox Christmas in January, the setup is the same. Here is how to do it, and when.

Build two or three sets, named for the person

A gift set answers the question "what do I get them?" before the shopper has to think about it.

  • Name it for the recipient, not the contents. "For the rider in your life" or "A gift for Mum" beats "Bundle 3".
  • Keep it to two or three sets. More choice slows gift buyers down.
  • Use products that already sell. A set is not the place to clear slow stock. The recipient has to like it.
  • Offer a small saving or a free extra. Enough to make the set the obvious choice over buying the items separately.

Show each set on the product pages of the items in it, so a shopper looking at one piece sees the set it belongs to. Our guide to frequently bought together offers covers where these perform best.

Add the gift layer in the cart

The cart is where a purchase becomes a gift. A few small additions make that easy.

  • Gift wrap or a gift box as a cart suggestion. A low-priced add-on that turns an order into a present. Show it in the cart for every order during the season.
  • A gift message. Rename your cart's order note link to "Add a gift message". Same feature, but now it tells the shopper what it is for.
  • A story card. If your products have a story, such as the artist, the farm or the team, a printed card explaining it adds a lot of perceived value for very little cost.

Use a seasonal gift with purchase

A free gift above a set order value works especially well in gift season, because shoppers are already buying more than one thing.

  • Set the amount about one gift above your normal order. If most orders are one item, a threshold near two items means "buy one for them, one for yourself".
  • Choose a gift that suits the season. A small seasonal item, a sample size, or a mini version of a bestseller.
  • Say what it is. "Spend 20 more for a free mini honey" works better than "Spend 20 more for a free gift".

Our gift with purchase guide covers choosing the gift and setting the threshold in detail.

Put the deadline where people can see it

Gift buyers care about one date more than any price: will it arrive in time?

  • Work out your last order dates now, for each region you ship to, using your courier's actual delivery times.
  • Show the date on product pages and in the cart. "Order by 15 December for Christmas delivery in the UK."
  • After the date, change the offer. A gift card, or a "ships in January" note, keeps late shoppers from feeling misled.

When to set it up

Earlier than you think. Gift research starts weeks before the day.

  • Diwali: sets live around three weeks before.
  • Black Friday: offers decided by early November, and tested before the week itself.
  • Christmas: sets and gift extras live by mid-November, with last order dates added once they are confirmed.
  • Orthodox Christmas (7 January): gift messaging through late December, with delivery dates for each country you ship to.

After the season

Switch it back. Seasonal headings, gift suggestions and holiday thresholds left running into February make a store look neglected. Note what sold, which set people chose and whether the gift threshold moved order size, so next year starts from real numbers.

Common questions

Should gift sets be separate products or bundles?

Bundles are usually easier. They use your existing products and stock, and the discount applies when the items are in the cart together. Separate gift set products make sense if you physically pack them differently.

Is free gift wrap better than paid gift wrap?

Free wrap is a nice touch but costs you on every order. Paid wrap at a low price is an easy add-on that most gift buyers take without thinking. Try paid first.

Do I need a discount on gift sets?

Not always. Convenience is the main value for gift buyers. A small saving or a free extra helps the set win over separate items, but a set that solves "what do I buy them" sells even at full price.

Putting it in place

Cart Uplift can show gift sets on product pages with a bundle discount that applies automatically at checkout. It can also suggest gift wrap in the cart drawer, rename the order note link to a gift message, and run a free gift with purchase with a progress bar. All of it can be switched on for the season and back off afterwards. There is a free plan to start.
