Gift with Purchase on Shopify: The Complete Setup Guide

Gift with purchase (GWP) is one of the oldest promotions in retail because it works on two levels at once: it gives shoppers a reason to spend more, and it feels more generous than a discount of the same value. On Shopify, the difference between a GWP that converts and one that frustrates comes down to mechanics.

Why a gift beats a discount of the same value

A ten percent discount reduces your revenue on every order. A gift costs you the wholesale price of one product, reads as a bigger gesture, and introduces the shopper to something they might buy at full price next time. Beauty and skincare stores use GWP for exactly this reason: a travel size of a premium product is cheap to give and markets itself.

Choosing the right gift

  • Low cost, high perceived value. Travel sizes, accessories, and samples of premium lines are the classic picks.
  • Broad appeal. The gift should make sense next to anything in the cart, not just one collection.
  • In stock, always. A gift that goes out of stock mid campaign breaks the promise your cart made. Pick something you can keep stocked.

Setting the threshold

The same rule as free shipping applies: set the gift threshold 15 to 30 percent above your average order value. If most orders land around 40, a gift at 55 asks for one extra item. You can also layer thresholds: free shipping at 50, gift at 80. Two goals in one journey, revealed one at a time, keeps the bar simple.

The mechanics that make or break it

Most GWP setups fail in the cart, not in the idea:

  • The gift should add itself in one tap when the threshold is reached, or better, be offered right in the cart drawer.
  • The gift must become free automatically at checkout. The old workaround of creating a duplicate product priced at zero causes inventory confusion and looks wrong in reports. The modern approach uses Shopify discount functions to zero out the gift line at checkout.
  • Progress must count what shoppers actually pay. If the bar counts the gift's catalog price toward the goal, the numbers contradict checkout and trust evaporates.
  • Removing paid items should remove the gift. If the cart drops below the threshold, the gift should not survive as a free souvenir.

Measuring whether it works

Watch two numbers: the share of orders that land just above the gift threshold, and your blended margin on those orders versus before. A working GWP pulls a visible cluster of orders up to the threshold. If nothing clusters, the threshold is too far above your typical cart or the gift is not motivating.

Set it up once

Cart Uplift runs gift with purchase natively: you pick the gift and the spend goal in the theme editor, the cart drawer shows progress toward it, and the gift is discounted to zero automatically at checkout through a Shopify discount function. No zero priced duplicate products, no manual discounts. It pairs naturally with the free shipping bar for a two tier goal.
