How to Increase Average Order Value on Shopify: 7 Tactics That Work

Average order value (AOV) is the fastest lever most Shopify stores have. Traffic is expensive and conversion gains are slow, but getting existing buyers to add one more item pays off immediately. Here are seven tactics that consistently work, roughly in order of effort versus impact.

1. Show frequently bought together offers in the cart

The cart is the highest intent surface in your store. A shopper who opens the cart has already decided to buy, so a relevant suggestion converts far better there than on a product page. Recommendations based on what other customers actually bought together outperform manual picks because they update as your catalog and buying patterns change. Read our guide to frequently bought together on Shopify for how this works in practice.

2. Set a free shipping threshold just above your current AOV

If your average order is around 42 in your store currency, set free shipping at 50. A progress bar in the cart that says how much is left to unlock free shipping gives shoppers a concrete reason to add one more item. Stores typically see a meaningful share of orders land just above the threshold. We covered setup details in our free shipping bar guide.

3. Offer bundle discounts

Bundles raise order size while protecting margin better than sitewide sales. A three item bundle at ten percent off moves two extra units for a small discount on the set. The key is automation: the discount should apply by itself at checkout. If customers have to find and type a code, most will not.

4. Add a gift with purchase

A free gift above a spend goal works for the same reason free shipping does, but feels more generous. Choose a low cost, high perceived value product. The mechanics matter here too: the gift should be added in one tap and discounted to zero automatically, not depend on a specially created zero price product.

5. Keep shoppers in a cart drawer instead of a cart page

A slide out cart drawer keeps shoppers in context. They can accept a suggestion, watch the free shipping bar fill, and go straight to checkout without a full page load. Every extra page between add to cart and checkout loses a percentage of buyers.

6. Show savings clearly

When a discount applies, show the original price struck through next to the discounted price, and show total savings in the cart. Shoppers who can see what they are saving complete checkout more often and add more to qualify for offers.

7. Measure, test, keep what wins

Track revenue from recommendations separately from baseline revenue, and A/B test thresholds and offers. A free shipping goal that is too high suppresses conversion; one that is too low gives away margin. The right numbers come from your data, not from a blog post.
