Two Cart Drawers on Shopify? How Overlapping Cart Apps Break Your Offers
Most cart problems on Shopify are not caused by one broken app. They are caused by several working apps doing the same job at once. Your theme has a cart drawer. You install an upsell app that has its own. Later you add a free gift app, then a bundle app, then a cash on delivery form. Each one works on its own. Together they fight over the same cart, and your offers stop making sense to shoppers.
This guide covers the symptoms, a quick audit you can do yourself, and how to decide what stays.
The symptoms
You may have an overlap if any of these sound familiar:
- Two drawers. One drawer flashes open and is replaced by another, or the wrong one opens on mobile.
- Two progress bars. One says you are 120 from free shipping, the other says 80.
- Gifts that multiply or vanish. A free gift is added twice, or added and then removed a second later.
- Discounts that stack or disappear. Two automatic discounts apply when you meant one, or neither applies at checkout.
- Messages that disagree. The header says free shipping on every order, and the cart says how much more to spend for free shipping.
- A slow cart. Every app adds its own scripts, and each one waits for the others.
Shoppers do not know any of this is happening. They just see a store that seems unsure what its own offer is.
Why it happens
Every cart app listens for the same moment: something was added to the cart. When it hears it, it does its job. It opens its drawer, updates its bar, checks whether a gift should be added, recalculates its discount.
When three apps hear the same event, all three act. Some try to hide the others. Some add or remove items. The result depends on which one finishes last, which can change from page to page and device to device.
A fifteen minute audit
You do not need a developer for this.
- List every app that touches the cart. Look for cart drawers, upsell and cross-sell apps, free gift apps, bundle apps, discount apps, shipping bar apps, and checkout or cash on delivery forms. Check your app list and your theme's app embeds.
- Check your theme's cart setting. Most themes let you choose between a drawer, a page and a notification. If an app provides your drawer, the theme should not open its own.
- Check your automatic discounts. In Shopify admin under Discounts, look for more than one automatic discount doing a similar job, such as two free shipping rules or two gift rules.
- Test like a shopper. Use a private browser window on your phone. Add one item, then a second, then remove one. Watch what opens, what each bar says, and what the cart contains.
- Read every message out loud. The announcement bar, the product page, the cart and checkout should all describe the same offer the same way.
Pick one owner for each job
For each job below, choose exactly one tool:
- The cart itself: theme drawer, cart page, or one app's drawer.
- Free shipping: one rule, shown in one bar.
- Free gift: one rule, one gift product.
- Bundles and quantity offers: one source of discounts.
- Product suggestions: one set, in one place.
Then switch the others off properly. Disabling an app's embed in the theme editor stops it loading. Uninstalling an app you no longer use is better still. Afterwards, check for leftover theme code and any automatic discounts the app created.
Make the messages agree
Once each job has one owner, line up the wording. If shipping is free on every order, the cart should not show a free shipping bar at all. Use that space for the next reward instead, such as a gift. If shipping is free above a threshold, the header should say the threshold, not "free shipping" on its own.
Our guide to free shipping bars covers how to word the bar once there is only one.
Retest after every change
After each app you switch off, run the shopper test again: add, add, remove, check out to the payment step. Change one thing at a time. If something breaks, you will know which change caused it.

Common questions
Is it bad to have more than one cart app?
Not always, but every app that changes the cart adds a chance of conflict. Keep one app per job, and make sure no two apps change the same thing.
Will removing apps lose my settings?
Usually yes, for the app you remove. Note down anything worth keeping, such as discount amounts and gift thresholds, before you uninstall.
Which drawer should I keep?
The one that does the most of the jobs above in one place, works on mobile, and matches your theme. A cart drawer vs cart page comparison covers the wider choice.
