Free Shipping Bars That Convert: Setup Guide for Shopify

Choosing the threshold
Set the threshold 15 to 30 percent above your current average order value. If your average order is 40 in your store currency, a threshold of 50 asks for one small add on rather than a second full purchase. Two checks before you commit:
- Margin math. Your average shipping cost must fit inside the margin of the extra items shoppers add. Model the worst case where an order lands exactly on the threshold.
- Catalog fit. There should be natural add on products priced near the gap. If the average shopper needs 10 more and your cheapest product is 35, the bar will frustrate rather than motivate.
Design a bar that actually motivates
- Show remaining amount, not percentage. "8.00 away from free shipping" is concrete. A bare progress bar is decoration.
- Update instantly. The bar should fill the moment an item is added, in the cart drawer, without a page reload.
- Celebrate the unlock. When the threshold is reached, say so plainly. The moment of unlocking is a small reward and it confirms the shopper made the right call.
- Count what shoppers actually pay. If a free gift or a discount is in the cart, progress should be based on the discounted, payable subtotal. A bar that counts a free gift at catalog price will contradict checkout and destroy trust.

The classic mistake is a bar in the cart with nothing behind it at checkout.
