Why Shopify Upsells Are Not Selling

Shopify upsells can show no sales because too few eligible shoppers see them, the suggested product is not relevant, checkout does not apply the offer correctly, or reporting misses the purchase. Check those four areas before increasing the discount.

Store visits alone cannot tell you whether an upsell works. Start with the customers who actually encounter the offer.

1. Check whether customers see the offer

A visitor who never adds a product has no opportunity to accept a cart recommendation. A direct purchase button may also bypass the drawer. Separate total visits from offer impressions: an impression records the offer being shown according to your app's tracking rules.

Test product-page Add to cart, collection quick-add and the header cart on the published theme. Repeat on mobile and desktop. Check that the intended drawer opens and the recommendation is visible.

If the offer is missing, send support the product URL, device and entry route. A larger discount cannot fix missing exposure.

2. Check product relevance

The suggested item should help with the original purchase. Check compatibility, available variants and price. A popular product may still be the wrong recommendation for that basket.

When order history is limited, manual recommendations let you choose the products yourself. They are useful for new products, small catalogues and deliberate companion selections. Choose a short list that fits the baskets where it appears; a general list does not create a different pairing for every product.

Our manual and AI recommendation guide explains when each approach makes sense.

3. Test acceptance and checkout

Accept the recommendation in a test basket. Confirm the right variant, quantity and price, then check the order summary. Required personalisation must remain attached to the item. Test any promotion you intend to combine with the offer.

Also decline the offer and continue with the original item. Remove the suggested product and check the totals again. The recommendation should leave the original purchase easy to complete.

4. Read the report correctly

Separate offer impressions, accepted adds and completed paid purchases. A customer can accept a suggestion and then remove it or abandon checkout. Tracking and consent settings can also affect what the app records.

For example, 40 impressions and three accepted adds show some interest, even if no order follows. Zero impressions point to a different question. Neither result alone proves the offer is broken.

Free gifts are not paid upsell revenue. An attributed purchase is a purchase linked to the offer by the reporting system; it is not proof that the offer caused extra revenue.

5. Change one thing at a time

Fix missing offers and incorrect prices immediately. If the setup works but traffic is low, record the counts and gather more relevant observations. A handful of impressions without a sale is inconclusive.

Test one change, such as the suggested product, before adding another incentive. Note stock, price and traffic changes so they do not get mistaken for offer performance.
