How to Choose Shopify Product Recommendations
A useful Shopify product recommendation helps with the customer's existing purchase. Choose products by their purpose, compatibility and additional cost, then check that the customer can select the right variant.
When purchase history is limited or you want direct control, manual recommendations let you select the products to suggest. Start with one clear reason for each selection.
What are manual product recommendations?
Manual recommendations are products selected by the merchant rather than chosen automatically by an algorithm. They give you control over the selection, but you still need to review availability and relevance.
A manually selected product is not automatically a product that customers frequently buy. Describe the suggestion honestly and avoid presenting a curated choice as purchase evidence.
When should you use manual recommendations?
- Limited order history: you have too few repeated purchases to judge product relationships.
- New products: the product has no established purchase pattern.
- A small catalogue: a short, useful selection is straightforward to maintain.
- A planned selection: you know which items suit a routine, occasion or intended use.
- Unhelpful automatic suggestions: the products shown do not fit the baskets you have checked.
Automatic recommendations can be useful when relevant purchase patterns emerge or the catalogue becomes harder to maintain manually. Review the actual output rather than choosing solely by the AI label. Our manual versus AI guide compares the methods.
Choose a companion, not an unwanted substitute
Ask what the customer may need alongside the main item. A compatible accessory or consumable can help with its use. Another version of the main item may be an alternative rather than something to add.
Check the exact variant. A shared category, colour or size label does not establish compatibility. Let the shopper choose required options and verify how personalised items enter the cart.
Keep the extra purchase reasonable
Compare the add-on price with the starting basket. In a hypothetical example, an £8 companion beside a £50 item asks for a smaller commitment than another £50 item. Its usefulness still matters more than its price.
Check product cost, any discount and extra fulfilment expense. Do not select an irrelevant item just because it fills the gap to a shipping or gift threshold.
How manual recommendations work in Cart Uplift
In the theme editor, open the Cart Uplift app embed and find Manual products in the recommendation settings. Select the products you want to suggest, save, and check the published drawer. The setting's empty-state guidance is to leave it blank for automatic suggestions; also review any recommendation-mode settings you use.
This picker supplies a selected product list. It does not by itself define a separate “when product A is in the cart, show product B” rule for every item. For a specific trigger and discounted companion, review Cart Uplift's targeted cart offers and test the configured rule.
Review the selection after launch
Check several common baskets, not just one. Remove products that do not fit the baskets where they appear, and review selections when stock, prices or seasons change.
Compare impressions, accepted adds and completed paid purchases. Include conversion and profit after variable costs. A product shown more often may earn more without being a better recommendation per opportunity.
